A royal watchmaker’s name, returned.

In 1754 Johan Lindquist, trained in Paris under Julien Le Roy, opened a watch manufactory in Stockholm. Four years later he was watchmaker to the Swedish court. Lindquist 1754 carries his name forward — designed in Stockholm, made in Switzerland.

Documented, not invented.

Every date below is drawn from the Swedish National Archives and the Svenskt biografiskt lexikon. Watches by his hand are held today in Nationalmuseum and Nordiska museet in Stockholm.

  1. Dalarna

    Born in Dalarna, where he first learns the watchmaker’s trade.

  2. Paris

    Apprenticed to Julien Le Roy, among the foremost watchmakers of France. Noticed by Ulric Scheffer, Sweden’s minister in Paris.

  3. Travels to Stockholm with four French journeymen to open his own workshop.

  4. The Board of Commerce grants him a watch manufactory in Stockholm.

  5. Appointed hovurmakare — watchmaker to the Swedish court.

  6. The workshop reaches its height: several hundred watches — gold and silver pocket watches, table and wall clocks — made to rival the best of England and France.

  7. Dies in Stockholm. His workshop ends with him.

His signature, at twelve.

The dial carries the script signature and the upright Arabic hours of Lindquist’s own watches, with a small seconds at six above the year the workshop opened. Nothing is added that he would not have recognised.
